An archive can only preserve what someone captured in time. The Hiberlink project found that about 75% of links in scholarly articles weren't archived anywhere within two weeks of the article's publication. The Internet Archive later checked the 2013 pages that Pew found dead. The Wayback Machine had copies of roughly 38% of them, so most of what was lost can't be recovered. That's why a citation on Critically is captured the moment it's made.
