Pooling many studies only helps if the studies pooled are representative. Carter and McCullough reanalyzed the 2010 ego-depletion meta-analysis. They found strong signs of publication bias and small-study effects, which suggest that studies finding the effect were more likely to be published. The original authors replied that this kind of bias affects other meta-analyses too, and that the reanalysis didn't identify where it came from. When you cite a meta-analysis, check whether it included unpublished data.
