In a 2021 study, an online college nutrition course added short modules on fact checkers' strategies. At pretest, 3 of 87 students left a website to check it against another source. After the modules, students read laterally far more often. Lateral reading is a habit that can be taught. Before reading an unfamiliar source closely, search for who is behind it and what others say about it.
